Requesting a Course
When you’re ready to request an Open Canvas site, you can do so using the Open Canvas Course Request Form. We recommend requesting your site at least 7 days before learners will need access to it, but there is typically a same-day or one-day turnaround time for requests made during business hours.
Please note: Open Canvas courses affiliated with the Center for Professional Learning (CPL) at the Graduate School of Education should not use this form. To learn more about requesting an Open Canvas course from CPL, please reach out to professionallearning@gse.upenn.edu
Learner Enrollment
You may have the option to offer your site on Penn’s Online Learning Platform, but this is not required. The Platform offers learners a self-service portal to register for your program and enroll themselves automatically. This is especially helpful if your program requires a fee and/or an application. To learn more about hosting your program on the Platform, please reach out to Semele at sturro@upenn.edu
If you cannot or do not want to host your program on Penn’s Online Learning Platform, you can work directly with the Open Canvas support team to create your course and enroll your learners. Simply download the CSV template using the button below, fill in the required information, and attach it in an email to lib-opencanvas@pobox.upenn.edu
Learner Enrollment CSV Tips
- Name corresponds to the user’s full name
- Email corresponds to the user’s email address. This will become the learner’s login username
- Type corresponds to the role the user needs within the site (e.g. Student, Teacher, TA)
- Course ID corresponds to the unique 4-digit number that is at the end of your site’s URL. For example, if your Open Canvas site URL is upenn-catalog.instructure.com/courses/0123 then your Course ID would be 0123
- Section ID can be left blank all the way down in most cases
- Notify should read TRUE all the way down
Open Canvas Mobile App
You can choose to access Open Canvas via Mobile App using these steps:
- Download the Canvas App from the Apple App Store for iOS devices, or the Google Play Store for Android devices
- In the Canvas App, click Find my school and type in UPenn Canvas Online Learning. You will then be directed to the Open Canvas login page.

Requests will be addressed Monday through Friday between the hours of 9am and 5pm Eastern Time. Please keep in mind that response time may vary based on volume and time of year.
