What Tools are available?

LTI stands for Learning Tools Interoperability and is an integration standard for third party tools. Canvas supports LTI which allows third party tools to be easily integrated and used within Canvas.

However, Open Canvas does not have all the same features and LTIs as Penn’s other Canvas environments. The table below shows an abridged comparison. If the LTI you’re looking for is absent from the table, it is not available in Open Canvas.

  • The ✅ (green checkmark) symbol means the LTI is available in Open Canvas
  • The ❌ (red X) symbol means the LTI is NOT available in Open Canvas
  • The ⚠️ (yellow triangle) symbol means the LTI is available in a limited capacity

Attendance in Open Canvas

Currently, there is no polling or attendance taking tool widely available in Open Canvas. In the past, programs have navigated this a variety of ways, such as utilizing the free version of Poll Everywhere, or a paid tier that their program is responsible for. Programs have also used and tracked with other external means such as Zoom polling or Google Sheets, then input that data into a CSV and uploaded it to Gradebook.

Adding LTIs to Open Canvas

Open Canvas is an evolving Canvas instance at Penn. If you’re interested in incorporating a new LTI into your Open Canvas site, please send an email to: lib-opencanvas@pobox.upenn.edu with your request.
